This assignment is an analysis of a US publicly-traded company, with either a subsidiary or division operating outside of North America, and its common stock as a prospective investment.
o Company Overview. Collect financial statements for the past 3 years, fiscal or calendar for Wal-Mart, Inc..
o Ratio analysis. Perform trend and ratio analysis on current and fixed assets, current and long term liabilities, owner’s equity, sales revenues, EBIT, net income, and earnings per share. Project these trends 3 years into the future for Wal-Mart, Inc.
o Stock price analysis. Research Wal-Mart, Inc. common stock price for the past 5 years. Research the Standard & Poor’s Stock Market Index (S&P 500) for the past 5 years. Chart the price movement in the company’s common stock against the S&P price movement. State and support your opinion on the company’s common stock as an investment today.
o Foreign operations. Select a company subsidiary or division operating outside of North America and describe the subsidiary’s or division’s operation, location, market(s), and line(s) of business, and how they relate to the parent company’s operations. Compare the financial growth of the parent company’s domestic operations with the growth of its overseas operations for the past 3 years. Discuss the sales and earnings per region.
o Global Analysis. Decide whether, in the event of an economic slowdown in the U.S., the company’s overseas revenue generation might serve to shelter the parent from slow or negative growth in the U.S. market. Explain and support your opinion.
